Crepas Aztecas

Sanborns is an institution in Mexico City. It’s a chain of department stores and cafes, so on my second day in el Distrito Federal I came to their cafe in La Casa de Azules, a beautiful old building.

The servers wear old fashioned uniforns and the counter resembles a 1950s era American diner.

The papaya served with limes was really the best papaya I’ve ever had. Lime juice complements the sweetness of the fruit well.

Huitlacoche is a fungus which grows on corn and is not easy to find in the USA. It was served in the sauce with corn kernels, poblano peppers and shredded chicken. The flavors were nice, but the sauce was a little soupy. The huitlacoche was lost in all of that cream. The pablanos added a slight spiciness to the dish.
